    First isolated by Henri Moissan in 1886 after numerous failed attempts by others

    Named after the mineral fluorite

    Early attempts at isolation led to serious injuries and deaths

    Moissan was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1906 partly for this discovery
